Task 1
This is my first post, where I’ll highlight three everyday objects that I believe exemplify great design.
” The Design Of Everyday Things ” – By Don Norman.
The three objects I have identified as exemplifying good design in my surroundings are those that not only serve their functional purposes effectively but also demonstrate thoughtful attention to aesthetics, usability, and innovation are:
1) Garlic Press
The object shown in the image is a garlic press, a kitchen implement designed to make it easy and mess-free for cooks to crush even large amounts of garlic cloves. The stuffer is generally aluminum or stainless steel. A garlic press has two handles and a chamber with tiny holes. You just put a clove of garlic in the chamber and squeeze on the handles, and like this plunger pushes it through those holes to create perfect chopped-up garlic. Besides garlic, it is versatile for pressing other small ingredients including ginger as well, olives, or even nuts for recipes.

Why do I consider it a Good Design?
- Functionality: One of the strengths of this design is its simplicity. It makes life easier for mincing garlic the traditional way of using a knife, which can be quite laborious and time-consuming.
- It’s Ergonomics: Long & ergonomic handle to get perfect leverage which makes it easy to press the garlic, you do not require large force. This feature makes for a not-too-tough-on-the-hands tool for all-day job comfort and suits people of varied strength capabilities so everyone can use it. The whole design is also optimized to be used easily by left and right-handed people alike, making them a kind of universal so to speak regardless of whether the user is left or right-handed dominant.
- Strong And Durably Built: It’s made with sturdy stainless steel, this press will remain in great condition after use. The material that is used, it does not degrade with use and cleaning, so that you can use the piston for a long period.
- Reduce The Risk of Injury: For those unfamiliar or uncomfortable with using knives, the ginger garlic press offers a safer alternative. The risk of cutting oneself is virtually eliminated, making it a family-friendly kitchen tool, even for beginners.
- Compact Design: It’s simple and an compact design makes the ginger garlic press easy to store in kitchen drawers or hang on utensil racks. Its slim form means it doesn’t take up much space, which is a plus for kitchens with limited storage.
Hence, this garlic press represents a solid, functional design that emphasizes durability, ease of use, and efficiency, all of which make it a valuable tool in any kitchen.
2) Sensor Lights
The object shown in the image is a sensor lights, it is a lighting fixture with an installed motion sensor to light on automatically when there is movement within a certain radius and automatically goes off after a set time of no motion. These are normally used inside and outside the house.

Why do I consider it a Good Design?
- Convenience: It is convenient because the sensor lights can detect automatically through one’s motion if one’s hand might be full or cannot be reached, such as in the garage; entryway; or in dark corridors where one no needs to fumble or search for the switch in which sensor lights can help in this.
- Energy Conservation: Sensor lights are good as they help to conserve energy only when the lights are needed. Sometimes most of us don’t or forget to turn off the lights when required, but with sensor lights it is able to automatically switch themselves off after periods of inactivity, thereby cutting energy use and utility bills.
- Adaptability: Sensor lights are very adaptable-from indoors to outdoors, from residential to commercial and public usage. For indoor use, they could be fitted in closets, kitchens, and hallways where temporary lighting is needed. For outdoor use, they light up pathways, driveways, or gardens for better visibility and security. This adaptability for various settings and uses makes it an excellent design for different purposes.
- Aesthetic and Minimalist: The sensor lights often feature sleek, minimalist designs that end up being seamlessly integrated into the environment. They range from indoor to outdoor mounting and have functional and aesthetic values when complementing a space. They generally do not obstruct anything and are designed in a very unobtrusive style and are usually available in many finishes. This would ensure that it would blend into the décor without being obtrusive.
Therefore, I do believe that sensor lights serve as a great example of good design, as with their ability to seamlessly integrate technology into everyday life, and improve convenience, energy efficiency, technological sophistication, and versatility, makes it an essential and thoughtfully designed tool for modern living.
3) Bottle
The object in the image shown is an insulated tumbler or thermos flask commonly used for storing and drinking beverages, whether you’re commuting, working, or traveling, this tumbler is designed to cater to diverse needs, making it a perfect blend of aesthetics and practicality. The tumbler has also different styles and sizes also with different types of lids such as sipper, gulper, globe, loop where one can purchase. And the brand is called The Vaya Drynk.

Why do I consider it a Good Design?
- Shape & Size: The tumbler has a sleek, cylindrical form with slightly tapered edges that allow for easy handling. The exterior features a textured, diamond-shaped pattern that adds a premium, modern aesthetic. And the ergonomic design makes it easy to grip and hold in one hand, even when full.
- Material: It’s made from high-quality, food-grade stainless steel, the outer shell is designed to be both durable and resistant to corrosion, dents, and wear. The inner surface is made from the same high-quality material, ensuring that beverages remain free from contamination or metallic taste. Talking about the lid & the base design of the tumbler, the lid is a sipper lid that has a magnetic latch & ensures that you will never hit your nose while taking a sip. About the base, it’s a non-slip base made of durable rubber or plastic, preventing it from slipping on smooth surfaces so that when it’s placed on desks, countertops, and tables, it will add an extra layer of stability when placed on surfaces.
- Versatility: One of the standout features of the Vaya Drynk brand is it has ability to store a variety of beverages, from hot coffee and tea to cold juices and smoothies. And there are interchangeable lid system allows users to switch between different drinking modes—sipping or pouring, depending on the beverage and situation.
- Compact Design: With its slim, space-saving form, the tumbler is easy to store or carry, making it an excellent companion for both small kitchens and on-the-go lifestyles.
